P.E.I. Humane Society overrun with rabbits

A bunny baby boom is causing some concern at the P.E.I. Humane Society.

Seven rabbits were recently dropped off the shelter, but within 48 hours the population had doubled.

"Surprise, one of the female rabbits was actually pregnant and had seven baby bunnies right here in the shelter," said development coordinator Jennifer Harkness.

That brings the total number of rabbits at the shelter to 16. By comparison, Harkness said, there were only 12 rabbits at the shelter through all of 2015.

"We have rabbits in dog kennels because we don't have the space," she said.

The Humane Society is now trying to raise more than $1,000 to care for the rabbits. Harkness said 14 rabbits need to be neutered at a of cost between $125 to $250, depending on ifthey are male or female.

Donations welcome

The baby bunnies won't be ready for adoption for another four or five weeks, Harkness said, but the others can be adopted for $65, which includes the medical costs.

If you don't want to adopt a rabbit, donations are still welcome. For a $100 donation, you can name one of the bunnies. For $50, you can get a plush bunny or teddy bear.

People can also help by donating things like aspen shavings, old newspapers or food pellets.
