Opening announcement for P.E.I.'s North Shore lobster fishery delayed until Tuesday

Fisheries and Oceans Canada will be making its next announcement on the opening of LFA 24 at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Lobster fishers on P.E.I.'s North Shore are still waiting to get the green light to set their traps for the 2024 spring season.

The opening oflobster fishing area (LFA) 24, which ranges from around North Cape to East Point in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, was originally scheduled for Monday morning. Due to high winds and waves in the marine forecast, however, Fisheries and Oceans Canada opted to delay theopening during a call with harbour representatives on Saturday.

A call scheduled for Monday was also delayed. The next call will be made Tuesdayat 9:30 a.m.

Meanwhile, the South Shore fishery in LFA 26A opened Saturdayafter a one-day delay due to high winds forecast for the Northumberland Strait.

Many fishers in that area returned with their first catches of the season on Monday.
