A child is in critical condition after a collision between a car and a pickup truck in Lower Newton, near Belfast, P.E.I., say police.

The crash happened on Route #1 late Thursday afternoon.

RCMP said members of the Belfast Rural Community Fire Department used the jaws of life to extract a man and a boy from the car.

The boy was airlifted to IWK in Halifax, and is being treated for critical injuries.

Poor weather likely a factor

The man driving the car and the man driving the pickup truck both sustained non-life threatening injuries, and were treated in Charlottetown.

Police said poor weather and road conditions likely played a part in the crash. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor.

RCMP said drivers should take extra care in winterroad conditions, and should ensure their tires, lights, windshield wipers and other accessories are in good working order.
