Maggie the German shepherd, who on Monday was the last animal left to be adopted at the P.E.I. Humane Society, has a new home.

The shelter received six applications on Tuesday, said Jennifer Harkness, the shelter's development and communications manager. She said they narrowed it down to one person who they think will be a good fit.

"I think it's excellent," she said. "To know that we finally found a home for her is really, really exciting and we're just thrilled."

Maggie, who was abused as a puppy and needs special care, is currently in foster care. The interview process was completed and the new owners will meet her this week, said Harkness. If all goes well, Maggie will go home with them, she said. If not, Maggie will be made available again.

Salsa, a three-year-old female, and Nacho, a seven-year-old male, must be adopted together as they've formed a bond, said the P.E.I. Humane Society. (P.E.I. Humane Society)

The shelter has seen an increase in adoptions as more people are staying home due to COVID-19, Harkness said.

On Monday, Maggie was the only animal left for adoption. But since then, two Chihuahua mixes Salsa and Nacho have become available. They must be adopted as a pair because they have formed a bond, Harkness said.
