A police dog helped track down a 31-year-old man from eastern P.E.I. who fled from officers trying to arrest him earlier this week.

Ina news release Thursday, RCMP said officers went to a home in Glenwilliam, just north of Murray River, on Sept. 24 with the intention of arresting someone with an outstanding warrant against him.

When the accused man ran off, officers chased him with the help of a police dog, ending in what the news release called his "safe apprehension."

Police said the man received minor injuries in the process.

"Adog is often used in a situation where it can enhance the public safety," RCMPCpl. Gavin Moore said in an interview. "In this particular case, when somebody is fleeing and has got a number of charges before the courts involving fleeing from police, it's in the public interest to deploy a dog."

The accused man was held in custody until a court appearance Thursday.

The Kings County man faces 20 charges related to six separate investigations into driving offences, property offences, resisting arrest and failing to appear in court.
