The P.E.I. government is looking at integrating midwives into the health-care system, says Health and Wellness Minister Robert Henderson.

"We are working towards trying to come up with legislative measures that would address the specific challenges of midwives in the province," Henderson said in the legislature Thursday.

"We are looking at legislation that would allow effective regulatory process in approving the credentials of the midwives."

Henderson said his staff is working with the P.E.I. Midwives Association in coming up with those regulations.

Midwives could be part of a new women's reproductive health centre, he said. The government announced that centre last month as part of plans to offer abortions in the province.

At that announcement, the plan was to open the centre by the end of this year.
