The Federation of P.E.I. Municipalities has asked the provincial government to delay tabling the new Municipal Government Act.

The act is scheduled to be tabled during the fall sitting of the legislature.

It's a big piece of legislation, and the federation wants more time to review it, says president Bruce MacDougall. (Natalia Goodwin)

The federation has asked for that to be pushed off until the spring sitting. It says it needs more time to review the legislation, and that it has already found a few areas of concern.

"The legislation that's presently in place is the oldest, probably, in the country. We need to take advantage of this opportunity," said federation president Bruce MacDougall.

"I don't find that there's a need to rush it and so we're saying let's get it right. Let's take the time and get it right."

In a statement to CBC News, government officials said they are working with the federation to address those concerns, and will decide whether maintaining the existing time frame is achievable in the coming days.
