Charlottetown police are warning members of the public to be vigilant after receiving a report about a new twist on an old internet dating scam.

Police say a woman reported that she'd formed a relationship with someone purporting to be a soldier stationed in Syria.

She was eventually asked to send money for him to visit her in Canada, according to police.

These types of internet dating scams are common, police say, but they can come in different forms.

Police are urging anyone who develops this type of online relationship to be cautious.
