Truth and Reconciliation Day: What's open and closed on P.E.I.?

Many businesses and services will be closed on Sept. 30 for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which is a federal statutory holiday in Canada.

Canada commemorates the National Day forTruth and Reconciliation on Monday, Sept. 30.

The day calls on people to reflect on the history of residential schools and how their legacy impacts Indigenous people to this day.

The dayhas been a statutory holiday on P.E.I. since 2022, so it's best to call ahead if you're planning on heading out to a local business or service.

Here'sa partial list of what's open and what's closed:

  • All federal, municipal and provincial government offices, including all Access P.E.I. locations, are closed.
  • Canada Post post offices are closed for the day, and there will be no mail delivery or collection.
  • Island Waste Management will not collect garbage, and disposal sites will be closed. Garbage normally collected on Monday will be picked up on Saturday, Oct. 5.
  • T3 Transit is operating on its usual weekday schedule for both city and rural buses.
  • P.E.I. Liquor Control Commission stores are closed.
  • Cannabis P.E.I. stores are closed.
  • P.E.I. public libraries are all closed.
  • Shoppers Drug Mart locations are all open regular hours.
  • Royalty Crossing mall is closed.
  • Confederation Court Mall is closed.
  • County Fair Mall in Summerside is closed but the Lawtons Drugs inside the mall is open from noon to 5 p.m.
  • Sobeys stores are all open regular hours.
  • Atlantic Superstores are open regular hours.
  • Walmart in Charlottetown and Summerside are both open regular hours
  • Murphy's Pharmacies in Summerside, East Royalty, Morell, Rustico, Tyne Valley and Wellington are closed. The pharmacies locations in Cornwall, Stratford, West Royalty and Queen Street are open from noon to 5 p.m.; Parkdale pharmacy is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and the Kensington location is open from 1 to 5 p.m.
  • Global Grocery Store in Charlottetown is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Brighton Clover Farm in Charlottetown is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
