P.E.I. pharmacists open annual meeting to the public

Pharmacists on P.E.I. say their role is expanding, and they want Islanders to know just how many services are available at their local pharmacy.

For the first time, the PEI Pharmacists Association has partnered with the PEI College of Pharmacists and opened their annual general meeting to the public this weekend.

The goal is to increase transparency and engage with Islanders, says Michelle Wyand, the Registrar with the college.

"The pharmacists that you encounter are responsible for reviewing your meds, providing education on meds, they now have an expanded role, (they're) now able to provide injections, prescribe meds for certain conditions," she said. "It's expanded over the last two years, since 2014."

The AGM is being held at Holland College in Charlottetown. It will highlight the activities of the year, finances, and recent changes, such as the institution of an extended practice certificate for pharmacists who treat anyone with an opioid dependence.

"The college has been established to ensure there is that public safety, the reason we are here is because of the public, they trust us," Wyand said. "We really want to be able to share with the public what the college has been doing and how that fits in to the mandate of that protection of the public."
