Contract trouble leaves hospital unplowed

Staff and early morning patients at Charlottetown's Queen Elizabeth Hospital had to park in unplowed parking lots Monday morning.

Officials with the hospital say the contractor who won the tender informed them last week they had too many contracts and would have to turn down the job.

Work is underway to sign a contract with the contractor who submitted the next lowest bid.

"Health PEI is doing everything it can to expedite the situation to ensure snow removal services are in place at the QEH, and we hope to have a contract in place with new vendor later this week," said Health PEI COO Denise Lewis Fleming.

In the meantime, said Fleming, a temporary agreement has been made to get the public and staff parking lots plowed.

The plowing didn't start until around 9 a.m. Monday, but Health PEI will be done sooner if there's another storm this week.
