Dr. Richard Wedge, Health PEI CEO, retiring at the end of May

Dr. Richard Wedge will retire as CEO of Health PEI at the end of May, he announced Monday.

Wedge has worked in health administration on P.E.I. for more than 20 years.

"It has been an honour and privilege to work as CEO of Health PEI," Wedge in a written release.

"My time as CEO has been both challenging and rewarding. I am proud to have been part of this organization and to have worked alongside such dedicated staff and physicians who go above and beyond every day to provide Islanders with the best care."

The recruitment process for a new CEO is currently underway.

Prior to joining the province in 1995, Wedge practised as a family physician at the Summerside Medical Centre.

While in government, he has held several positions including medical director to the Workers Compensation Board and medical director of both East Prince and Queens health regions.

More recently, he served as Health PEI's provincial medical director and executive director of medical affairs before becoming CEO in 2012.

"We have valued his leadership and advice, and wish him well and all the best in his future endeavours," said Health PEI board chairwoman Phyllis Horne.
