Driver's license suspended after 2nd school bus crash in 2 days

RCMP in Montague, P.E.I., say they're investigating the second school bus collision in as many days involving the same driver.

Police say they received a complaint at 7:40 a.m. Wednesday that a school bus carrying one high school passenger had gone off the road in Eldon.

"The bus crossed over the centre line, went into the ditch and back through a shallow field and then back up on to the roadway," said RCMP Cpl. Scott Stevenson.

"The bus sustained a little bit of damage. The student asked to be let off the bus and the driver continued on a short ways where he waited for a replacement bus."

Passed sobriety test

Stevenson said officers at the scene felt there were no signs of alcohol impairment.

"He was brought back to Kings District office in Montague where a drug recognition expert performed a sobriety test on him for drugs, which he passed," said Stevenson.

RCMP say the 55-year-old driver was issued a seven-day driving suspension while the investigation continues.

On Tuesday, the same driver was involved in a crash between a school bus and a pick-up truck in Newtown Cross according to police.No one was injured in that accident.

School board officials say they are also investigating.

Officials say a substitute driver has been assigned to the route for an indefinite period.
