School greenhouse connects students to the earth and the community

A group of students at Charlottetown Rural High School are getting their hands dirty as part of a class project this semester.

For the past few months, they've been growing produce in the school's greenhouse in a partnership with the P.E.I. Farm Centre.

Some of the plants were sold as part of a fundraiser and others will go to the Legacy Garden. The goal was to show students the basics of growing theirown food and to connect them with the community.

Grade 12 student Cameron Trainor said he'd like to continue with gardening after the program is over.

"I definitely think that'd be a very interesting thing to do. You know, go home, maybe start a garden at home or even just get involved at the legacy garden and volunteer there," said Trainor.

"It's a lot of fun, so I think this has been a really great experience to open us up to that."

The school has future plans to use the produce for the school's culinary class and in its cafeteria.
