P.E.I. schools compete in Destination Imagination tournament

Students from 10 intermediate schools across P.E.I. are taking part Saturday in what organizers call "the Olympics of creativity and innovation."

This is the first Destination Imagination tournament on Prince Edward Island. Last year, Island teams competed at the event in Nova Scotia.

Destination Imagination is an annual challenge where youth from around the world face off to demonstrate innovative thinking.

The Island students have prepared a presentations for the judges in the fields of improv, engineering, service learning or the fine arts.

They also do an instant challenge, which they see for the first time at the competition.

"Most people are familiar with the science fair or heritage fair, so Destination Imagination targets different groups of students who may be interested in other things," said Kieran Hennessey, the business curriculum specialist with the Department of Education.

"It's a different type of tournament to target those types of students and those interests."

At least one of the P.E.I. winners will go on to the Destination Imagination Global Finals in May, which is held annually in Tennessee and features 16,000 young people from around the world.
