Chance of high waves along P.E.I. shorelines prompts special weather statement

Environment Canada says high winds could lead to some big waves along the northern and eastern shorelines of Prince Edward Island on Friday.

The weather agency issued a special weather statement for all three countieswarning of higher than normal water levels along north-facing coastlines Fridayafternoon during high tide.

"These large waves can cause coastal erosion in vulnerable areas, as well as damage to infrastructure along the shoreline, especially at locations that have been prone to impacts during similar events," the special weather statement reads.

Environment Canada expectsmaximum wave heights to reach three to five metres, along with pounding surf as the waves break near the shore.

CBC meteorologist Jay Scotland said the strongest wind is forecast to occur Thursday overnight into early Fridaymorning.
