P.E.I.'s fire marshal is investigating the cause of a fire Wednesday afternoon that caused extensive damage to a home in Springfield West.

The O'Leary Fire Department responded to the call at 3:30 p.m. and found the sole occupant of the home standing in his driveway, said Fire Chief Blair Perry.

"His house was full of smoke, he couldn't get back in so he left the job to us," Perry said.

Firefighters had the fire under control within an hour, Perry said, but not before the basement and an upstairs wall was heavily damaged. He couldn't say if the house is a total loss.

"Highly doubt it's repairable but that'll be up to the insurance company," he said.

The fire started in the basement, Perry said.
