P.E.I. students score well in financial literacy

International testing results on 15-year-olds released Wednesday showed that P.E.I. students rankly highly when it comes to financial literacy.

The tests, from the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), were administered to 48,000 students from 15 countries, including seven Canadian provinces, in 2015.

Internationally, 78 per cent of demonstrated a minimum level of financial literacy. Canadian students scored 87 per cent, second only to Belgium. P.E.I. scores were around the Canadian average.

The tests also found less disparity in the scores between different groups on the Island.

Generally, students with banks accounts, students from economically advantaged families, and students with a parent who had complete college or university performed better on the test. The differences on P.E.I., however, were not statistically significant.
