A 19-year-old Summerside man faces assault charges and another is recovering from surgery to his face after an incident outside Credit Union Place on Saturday.

Summerside Police responded to a 911 call at about 3 p.m. Saturday and found the victim suffering from "significant facial injuries," said Summerside Police Cpl. Jason Blacquiere.

Witnesses reported that the victim, also 19, was involved in a verbal argument with the suspect, who then punched the victim in the face. The suspect was arrested at the scene and will appear before a Justice of the Peace Sunday on a charge of assault causing bodily harm.

No other charges are expected, Blacquire said.

The victim was initially taken to Prince County Hospital in Summerside but was then transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown for surgery.

The victim's injuries are significant but not life threatening, police said. The victim and suspect are known to one another and police do not consider it a random event.
