Byelection set for vacant Summerside council seat

Nominations are in and a date has been selected for byelection in Ward 5, Hillcrest-Platte River.

Vote comes after previous Ward 5 councillor was voted out under P.E.I.'s Municipal Government Act

Nominations are in and a date has been selected for abyelection in Summerside.

Elections P.E.I. says thevote to fill the vacant council seat in Ward 5, Hillcrest-Platte River, willhappenMonday, Oct. 7.

Six candidates are on the ballot: Gerard Deveau, Ginny Kennedy, Patrick McMahon, Pete Peters, Basil Stewart and Ken Trenholm.

"It is encouraging to see so many candidates register for this byelection, and now I would like to encourage all eligible residents of Ward 5 to vote," Tim Garrity, municipal election officer with Elections P.E.I., said in a news release.

Stewart served asmayor of Summerside from 1985 to 2014, and again from 2018 to 2022.

The byelection comes after Barb Gallant was voted out ofcouncil back in Juneon the grounds she had missed three consecutive council meetings after being charged with a criminal offence in April.

Voting will beat Credit Union Place, with advanced polls on Sept. 28, Oct. 1 and Oct. 4. Polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.
