A family visiting P.E.I. that ran into trouble came across the right police officer, and now Summerside Const. Mike Jones has been recognized for his kindness.

Last summer Jones came across a couple and their two children on the side of the road late at night.

They were on the Island for a day trip when their truck broke down. They told him they were going to spend the night in the vehicle. Jones took them to a hotel and, without telling them, paid for the room.

'Caught me by surprise'

Tammy Palmer, general manager of the Causeway Bay Hotel in Summerside, found out what had happened the next morning, and wrote a letter to the city.

"He didn't even want anyone to know. He just wanted it done and I think that was what caught me," said Palmer.

"[It] just really caught me by surprise and it was very pleasing to see, so I decided to write a letter to the city to acknowledge him for that."

Award at police services banquet

Palmer said she would have tried to get in touch with the family, but doesn't know who they are because the room was in Jones' name.

"I didn't really want any attention I guess.I just kind of did it because I think that most of the people I work with there, if they had have been in the same position they would have done the same thing," said Jones.

"I don't think I did anything extraordinary. I just think there were some people that needed help and I had the means to do it."

Jones recently received a Random Act of Kindness award at the Summerside Police Services Recognition Banquet.
