2 teenagers arrested following violent robbery in park

Two young people were arrested in the Charlottetown area in the early hours of Tuesday morning following a reported violent robbery in Summerside.

Two young people were arrested in the Charlottetown area in the early hours of Tuesday morning following a reported violent robbery in Summerside.

Summerside police say they were alerted shortly after midnight by hospital staff when the victim a man in his 20s turned up at Prince County Hospital for treatment of injuries.

The victim walked from Rotary Friendship Parkto the nearby PCH himself, according to Sgt. Jason Blacquiere, Summerside Police Services.

"The victim reported to us that he had gone voluntarily [to the park] with the two suspects. They're all known to each other. And once in the park, the two suspects assaulted him," he said.

Blacquiere said the attack happened near the gazebo in the park and the alleged attackers are both male, aged 17 and 18.

"The victim reported it felt like it went on for some time. He was punched repeatedly and kicked repeatedly, and he also reported being hit by some sort of wooden object," said Blacquiere.

The two suspects then took the victim's car along with some personal items and drove away, police said.

Summerside police asked other police agencies to be on the lookout for the vehicle.

Around 1 a.m. Tuesday it was spotted by Charlottetown police, who pursued the vehicleand eventually arrested the suspects.

The suspects are facing charges of robbery with a weapon, theft of motor vehicle, assault with a weapon, as well as assault and possession of a dangerous weapon. Both suspects were scheduled to appear in court Tuesday afternoon.

The victim was treated for non-life threatening injuries and released from hospital.

Police said this was not a random incident.
