A youth council launched in Summerside, P.E.I., last year has developed a survey to explore what issues are important to local young people.

The council is made up of students from every school in the city, from Grade 7 up, along with two home-schooled students.

City Coun. Gordie Whitlock, who chairs the council, said the students developed the survey themselves.

"The whole idea of the youth committee is to tap into their ideas," said Whitlock.

"I'm trying not to lead the thing; I'm trying to get them to lead it."

Aiming for change

Council member Karen Farag said they will be going over the surveys for issues that stand out.

"Then we'd take action for that," said Farag.

"We'd discuss what we could do, who could we talk to, and how could it be changed."

She hopes the youth council will be able to encourage city council to make changes to make the city more youth-friendly.
