5 fun things to do on P.E.I. this weekend

School starts on Tuesday, but if you're not busy buying pencils and erasers for your kids or moving into residence at UPEI or Holland College, there are some fun things to do this Labour Day weekend.

A beer festival and cow bingo are just some of the options for a good time on P.E.I.

Sorry, folks, there's no way to sugarcoat it: summer's over after this weekend.

School starts on Tuesday, but if you're not busy buying pencils and erasers for your kids or moving into residence at UPEI or Holland College, there are some fun things to do this Labour Day weekend.

1. P.E.I. Beer Festival

More than 100 brands of beer will be available to sample at the P.E.I. Beer Festival on Friday and Saturday. (CBC)

The annual month-long Fall Flavours Festival begins Friday. One of the events this weekend is the Prince Edward Island Beer Festival at the Delta Hotel in Charlottetown.

There will be more than 100 beers available (but we you don't recommend you try to sample them all), as well as food pairings and entertainment.

It runs Friday at 6:30 p.m., plus Saturday at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Advance tickets are $40 for the evening events and $30 for Saturday afternoon, and $10 more if you buy at the door.

2. Acadian Festival

Cow bingo (you read that right) and a horse comedy show (you read that right, too) are just two of the events this weekend at the Agricultural Exhibition and Acadian Festival in Abram-Village.

So it shouldn't surprise you there's also a rubber boot-throwing competition, a pole-climbing show and a competition featuring "some of P.E.I.'s strongest women demonstrating their strengths."

And of course, there will be plenty of food, music and dancing, plus a parade on Sunday afternoon.

Kids 18 and younger get in free Friday and Saturday.

Oh, and in case you didn't know, cow bingo is where participants pick a number from a big board and try to guess where the cow leaves a patty at the end of the afternoon on Sunday.

3. The (Post) Mistress

This is your last chance to see the one-woman musical at Victoria Playhouse. It runs Friday and Saturday night at 7:30, and its last performance is Sunday at 2 p.m.

The show is set in 1968 in the fictional town of Lovely, and stars veteran actress Martha Irving as a post office worker who gossips about all people in town.

Surely that could never happen in P.E.I.!

Adult tickets are $32.50.

4. Ross Family Ceilidh

When was the last time you tapped your foot and slapped your knee at a good old-fashioned ceilidh?

If you're overdue, the Ross Family Ceilidh at the Stanley Bridge Hall has a reputation as one of the Island's best. The siblings have been hosting ceilidhs for more than 10 years, and it's safe to say they have it down pat.

Their next one is Monday night at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets at the door are $15 for adults, $10 for children 12 and younger.
