Details of the renovations at Three Oaks Senior High School in Summerside, P.E.I., were unveiled at a public meeting Thursday evening.

The $15-million renovation, announced in August, is the first major upgrade for the school since it was built in 1976.

The plans were the end result of a lot of consultation, says principal Jeff Clow. (CBC)

School Principal Jeff Clow said the plans come after a lot of feedback from students and staff, and are meant to keep the school current for the next 20 to 30 years.

"We're getting a lot of input from staff when it comes down to what they want to see at the school, what they want to see in the classrooms, what they want the school to be," said Clow.

The renovations will include:

  • A black box theatre seating 120 people.
  • New culinary arts lab, with a greenhouse attached
  • Breakout rooms in the library for students to work on small group projects. Many classrooms will also have breakout rooms added.
  • Renovated locker rooms for the gym, including two washrooms accessible from outside on the field.
  • Larger band room.
  • Three of four computer labs will be repurposed, because more computer work is being done in classrooms. Two will be converted to biology labs.
  • Converting current locker room area into meeting rooms and storage space. New lockers will distributed around the school.

Renovations have already started on the school parking lot. Work on the building itself is set to start next month, and is expected to take two and a half years to complete.

There will be a lot more windows added throughout the school for natural lighting.

Almost every corner of the school is being renovated, with all classrooms will getting new floors, paint, and lighting.
