Montague will continue with Three Rivers region amalgamation talks

Georgetown Mayor Lewis Lavandier says he's happy Montague wants to re-enter talks about a possible amalgamation among seven communities in eastern P.E.I.

Lavandier said he received an email from officials in Montague asking to continue to be a part of the talks exploring amalgamation with the other six communities in the Three Rivers region.

The Town of Montague stepped away from the talks last month after MayorRichard Collins said council felt the proposed boundaries were too big.

But Montague officials say residents wanted them to continue to take part in the discussions before a final decision is made.

Lavandier said he was glad to hear Montague council had changed its position.

"We have never shut the door actually on Montague. We have left the door open. I think all of our communities have to represented," said Lavandier.

"I think Montague got the message that their residents wanted them at the table and I think they've changed their mind on it. And so it's a good thing."

The next closed meeting of the six communities is March 1.

The seven communities involved are Georgetown, Montague, Lower Montague, Brudenell, Cardigan, Valleyfield and Lorne Valley.
