Giving bark to the community: Local businesses plant trees

The City of Charlottetown partnered with local businesses to offset the paper they use annually by planting 100 trees at Upton Farmlands.

McInnes Cooper's Charlottetown office started the initiative in 2014 and the city has been working with them on it ever since.

This year,Buns and Things Bakery, Howatt's Enviro Paints, and Invescojoined the Business Tree Planting Challenge.

Volunteers from the businesses and city staff added trees to the Confederation Forest, a part of the Macphail Woods Ecological Forestry Project.

Planting fir the future

"For the past three years, we have had sustainably minded businesses step forward to wholeheartedly participate in this tree planting to try to reduce some of the impact they have on the environment,"Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee said in a news release.

Conservatree.org helped the City calculate the number of trees needed to offset the usage by the local businesses.

The equation is based on one tree producing 8,333 sheets of paper.

The businesses covered the cost of all the trees, which are species native to the Island.
