UPEI, faculty head back to bargaining table

Contract negotiations between UPEI and its faculty association are scheduled to resume on Friday.

There are dates set for August and September as well, the university says.

The faculty contract expired on June 30.

Negotiations on a new contract began in February, but have not gone smoothly. The faculty association had filed a labour complaint against the UPEI Board of Governors, and refused to resume negotiations until that complaint was heard. The university had scheduled a conciliator but the union refused to attend.

But last month, the parties got together for an informal discussion and committed to resuming their discussions and agreed to withdraw all legal action and conciliation.

The faculty association represents nearly 400 full- and part-time faculty and sessional instructors and others. Issues under negotiation include changes to the structure of the faculty's pension plan.
