She jumped! Island senior crosses skydiving off her bucket list
'It was just like a dream'
She did it! VeronicaMacDermid, 64, of Charlottetown fulfilled a 30-year dream and parachuted from a plane.
MacDermid is turning 65 next spring and wanted to start checking things off a bucket list, which included skydiving.
We just went for it. Veronica MacDermid
"It was wonderful," she told CBC Radio: Island Morning co-host Mitch Cormier Tuesday morning.
With her niece and her daughter, MacDermid drove to the airport in Moncton, N.B., on the weekend, where she watched a safety video and staffsuited her up for the tandem jump with an instructor.
'Can I do this?'
They went up in a tiny airplane and looked down on P.E.I.
"My God it was beautiful," MacDermid said of looking down on the fall foliage.
It wasn`t until herinstructor opened the plane's door and the wind gusted in, MacDermid said, that she had a sudden, fleeting doubt.
"Right then I thought can I do this? Then I thought, well I'm up here I might as well go with him, cause he's gonna haul me out!" he laughed. "It was sink or swim!"
"We just went for it," she said. "It was just like a dream," once the parachute opened, she added. They landed smoothly without incident.
Thrilled with the experience
"I did it my way!" she laughed, singing the tune from the Frank Sinatra song.
MacDermid finished off her triumphant day with lunch and a shopping trip to the Moncton Costco.
