Veseys Seeds in York is donating 150,000 red and white tulip bulbs to 150 communitiesacross Canada. The idea is to plant the bulbs now so they will bloom in the spring.

"It also just instills a love of gardening in so many people, and I know these 1,000 tulip gardens are going to raise a lot of eyebrows in a lot of communities," said John Barrett, director of sales, marketing and development with Veseys Seeds.

"People are just going to be tickled pink when they see them blooming next springand hopefully, they'll think of Canada and Canada's 150th birthday and possibly, they might think of us too."

There are 17 communities in the Maritimes that received free bulbs to help mark the country's birthday.

Veseys Seeds was involved in a similar project last year to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War andCanada's liberation of Holland.
