Voter turnout in P.E.I. plebiscite at 16.5%

As of Friday afternoon, 16.51 per cent of registered voters have cast ballots in the P.E.I. plebsicite on electoral reform.

As of Friday afternoon, 16.51 per cent of registered voters have cast ballots in the P.E.I. plebsicite on electoral reform.

That accounts for 16,851 votes.

According to Elections P.E.I., 60 per cent of the voting so far has been online, with 13 cast by telephone, and 27 per cent via paper ballot.

Polling stations opened Friday at 4 p.m., and will continue on Saturday

Registered voters have until Nov. 7 to rank fiveelectoral systems in order of preference.

The Elections P.E.I. Helpline is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. everyday at 1-888-234-VOTE to assist Islanders in the process.

The results of the plebiscite are not binding, but the province can use them when deciding whether to change the current electoral system.
