Former RCMP officer's weapons trial slated for January

The trial of formerRCMPofficer 43-year-old Jeffrey RaeGillis, charged with 12 weapons-related offences, has been scheduled to start in January 2017.

The charges against the former Mountie stem from the seizure in February 2016 of what police say weremore than 70 firearms from his Charlottetown home.

The Nova Scotia-based Serious Incident Response Team led the investigation and filed a report with the P.E.I. Department of Justice and Public Safety.

Gillis has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The charges include breach of trust for falsely reporting the destruction of firearms to government agencies.

Those alleged false reports involved two 12-gauge shotguns, a 10-gauge shotgun, a .357-calibre revolver and a 9 millimetresemi-automatic pistol.

The trial is slated to take about four weeks.

Gillis was not present in provincial court Tuesday when the trial date was set.
