Smoke alarm alerts sleeping resident to fire

A smoke alarm woke up a person in eastern P.E.I. early Monday morning, allowing them to escape from a fire in their home.

The Brooklyn, P.E.I., resident, the sole occupant of the building, was treated by Island EMS and transported to hospital for smoke inhalation. Montague Fire Department responded. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Brooklyn fire was one of three houses fires reported on the Island during the weekend.

Family of 4 escapes

Kensington Fire Department responded toa fire in a single family home Saturday night.

The family of four escaped with no injuries.

The Fire Marshal's Office ruled the fire accidental, with the cause being a light in the attic that was too close to combustibles.

Sundaynight, Miminegash Fire Department responded to a house fire. The resident was not at home and the structure was completely destroyed. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Fire Marshal's Office reminded Islanders that working smoke alarms save lives. Smoke alarms should be placed on every level of the home and outside every sleeping area.
