Much of P.E.I. shut down Monday in face of winter storm

Following weekend weather that held the promise of spring, a winter storm hit the Island Monday that had plow dispatchers advising people to stay home.

Roads weresnow covered and slippery, and visibility in parts of the province was described as being only fair.

Public schools, UPEI,Holland College and provincial civil service offices wereclosed for the day.

Several flights at Charlottetown Airport were cancelled.

Winds were calm in Charlottetown and there was no snow falling at 6 a.m., with a temperature of -6 C.

The snow started shortly after 8 a.m.with the winds picking up to 30 km/h with gusts to 50, increasing to 70 by mid-afternoon.

CBC meteorologist TinaSimpkin said the weather Tuesday should be good for cleaning up, with temperatures approaching 0 C and winds easing off with gusts to 40 km/h.
