P.E.I. woman, 41, charged with sex crimes involving a minor

A 41-year-old woman from Queens County has been charged with sexual assault and sexual interference on a person under the age of 16, RCMP say.

A 41-year-old P.E.I. woman has been charged with sexual assault and sexual interference on a person under the age of 16.

RCMP said the force's Major Crime Unit began its investigation on Sept. 14.

On Sept. 24, the woman was arrested in Queens County and charged with:

  • Sexual assault.
  • Sexual interference.
  • Invitation to sexual touching.
  • Permitting a person under 19 to consume cannabis contrary to the Cannabis Control Act.

RCMP Cpl. Gavin Mooresaid police believe there is no threat to the greater public.

"This is not believed to be a situation where we anticipate further victims coming forward. This investigation does continue."

The woman appeared before a justice of the peace and was released on strict conditions.She is scheduled to appear againin provincial courton Oct. 28.

Documents show Bethany Jean Toombs charged

Police did not release any other details, including the name of the accused, the gender of the alleged victim or how the two were connected.

However, documents on file at the courthouse in Charlottetown show that Bethany JeanToombs, 41, was arrested on the charges listed in the RCMP statement,and later released.

As of late Wednesday, the staff section of the East Wiltshire Intermediate School website had a Bethany Toombslisted as a counsellor with the Cornwall school'sstudent services team. That name had been taken off the list as of Thursday morning.

CBC News reached out to the Public Schools Branch for comment but received no reply.
