Plan in place to fix lighthouse

Engineers with the P.E.I. government have come up with a plan to save the West Point lighthouse from further erosion.

Engineers with the P.E.I. government have come up with a plan to save the West Point lighthouse from further erosion.

A storm surge in December destroyed a sand dune that protected the lighthouse.

"Now with no dune left in front of the structure, we're scared that ice will build up and maybe a bit of a storm surge will push that ice right into the building and knock it over and do some severe damage," said Robert Henderson, MLA for the area.

120 metres of armour stone will be placed in front of the lighthouse property.

"We've got quite an investment there and we just don't want to leave it exposed for too long, and that's why we felt armour stone would provide that immediate protection and that would allow us time to maybe build up the dune," said Henderson.

Filter fabric will also be used to hold back as much soil as possible.

Henderson said tenders for the project will likely be called next week. He said he's not sure how much the work will cost.
