Park officials say they're trying to control a persistent poison ivy problem at Cedar Dunes Provincial Park in western P.E.I.

Signs have already been posted warning visitors of the plant and sections of the park have been blocked off.

Shane Arbing, manager of provincial parks on P.E.I., said this year crews are taking steps to prevent any further spread.

"We have had an issue with Cedar Dunes Provincial Park with a growing, very pervasive poison ivy issue. So we signed it the last couple of years and this year we have started an eradication program so hopefully we can get it under control over the next couple of seasons," he said.

"We have got a contractor that has been approved through the Department of Environment to come in and do a spray program in the areas that are close to the campgrounds and close to the office."

Arbing said Cedar Dunes Provincial Park seems to be the only park on the Island that has had an issue with poison ivy.
