Poppy-can thief sentenced to 14 days house arrest

A Charlottetown woman who posed as a Royal Canadian Legion volunteer in order to steal poppy cans last Remembrance Day was sentenced to 14 days house arrest on Tuesday.

Cynthia Ann Curran, 31, pleaded guilty to taking 15 cans from local stores containing a between$300 and$400 total.

The Crown prosecutor told the court that poppy-can thefts hurt elderly, low-income war veterans and their families.

At sentencing Thursday, the court heard the woman was in a methadone program at the time of the thefts and continues to be treated for drug addiction.

She's been ordered to pay back the moneyand must perform 30 hours of community service in addition to the 14-day conditional sentence.
