Port of Georgetown handed over to local organization

Federal Revenue Minister Gail Shea announced the Georgetown wharf is now in the hands of the Georgetown Port Inc., which is run by a group of volunteers.

A local authority has taken over thelast major portin P.E.I.

Today, Federal Revenue Minister Gail Shea announced the Georgetown wharf is now in the hands of the Georgetown Port Inc., which is run by a group of volunteers.

The government is also giving the group $3.8 million formaintenance.

Tim Mair, the chair of the Georgetown Port Inc., said their goal is to increase revenues to expand the wharf. Mair said theyll spend the next year coming up with a plan.

Currently, a fish plant and a mussel operation work on the 290 metre wharf.

This is the fourth P.E.I. port to be handed over by the federal government. Local authorities already run Charlottetown, Summerside and Souris.
