Linkletter Farms recalled potatoes after needle found

The two potatoes grown on P.E.I. and found in Newfoundland and Labrador this week with metal objects in them both came from the same batch, say RCMP.

The two potatoes, which police believe had metal deliberately inserted into them, were packaged in the same batch, says RCMP Sgt. Leanne Butler. (Kevin Yarr/CBC)

That means they were both packed on the same day.

"We have been able to establish they were from the same batch," said Sgt. Leanne Butler.

"The two potatoes from Labrador and Newfoundland are on the way here. And we'll conduct forensic testing on them when they arrive."

A sewing needle was found in a potato by a man from Wabush, near Labrador City, while he was peeling it for dinner. A metal object was found in a second potato that was bought from a store in Carmanville, Newfoundland.

The potatoes came from Linkletter Farms, based in Summerside, P.E.I. Police have been investigating at the packing plant, and are still conducting interviews.

The company has voluntarily recalled all of its potatoes under the brand names Link, Market Town Co-op, and Carr's blue and brown stripe.

It is still harvesting and storing potatoes, but none are being packaged or sold.
