Province extends drug plan for palliative home care

The P.E.I. government is extending a pilot project that covers drug costs for those receiving palliative care at home.

The P.E.I. government is extending a pilot project that covers drug costs for those receiving palliative care at home.

The 12-month initiative began a year ago. It's been used by 81 patients in that time, ranging in age from 18 months to 96.

Health Minister Doug Currie said the program allows people to die compassionately in their own homes.

"Giving individuals the option to remain at home helps strengthen communities and reduces the emotional and financial burden on families," he said in a news release Friday.

The provincial government is investing an additional $750,000 to continue the project for another 18 months on top of the $547,500 it invested during the first phase.

Officials estimate the program has resulted in an estimated savings to the health-care system of more than $1 million.

The Palliative Care Association of P.E.I.supports the program, which it saysbenefits P.E.I. families.
