RCMP in P.E.I. prepare for royal visit

RCMP on P.E.I. are gearing up to provide security for the Royal visit to the Island.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall arrive on Monday at around 6 p.m.

Police have been preparing for months and extra RCMP officers will be brought in from other provinces.

Sergeant Andrew Blackadar speaks for the RCMP on the island. He said they are working closely with Heritage Canada who dictate the schedule and venues for the visit.

This one is going to be somewhat challenging because the royal couple is splitting while they are here in the province, said Blackadar. In some cases, we'll have to leap-frog ahead of one another to get to the other venue.

Blackadar says Charlottetown police will be assisting with traffic control, the motorcades and security.

The visit is Prince Charles's 17th to Canada, and the third for Camilla. It features events to celebrate Queen Victoria's birthday and will mark the centenary of the First World War and the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference, which led to Canadian confederation.
