Police are reminding Island residents to be wary of telephone calls from people saying they are employees of the Canada Revenue Agency.

Cpl. Scott Stevenson, media relations officer for the P.E.I. RCMP said there have been an increased number of calls recently telling people they have outstanding tax balances that must be paid or they will be arrested.

"When CRA employees call taxpayers, they follow established procedures to ensure personal information is protected," said Stevenson.

He said people can confirm the authenticity of a call by contacting CRAusing its official telephone number for individual tax enquiries: 1-800-959-8281. People can also verify your individual tax account through a secure CRA portal: My Account.
