The province has released the names of the childcare operations chosen to become early years centres this fall under a new regulated system.

The centres will receive financial assistance from the government in exchange to agreeing to certain regulations. Those includea new curriculum, set rates, and guidelines on what food can be served.

Linda Lowther, assistant deputy minister for early childhood development, said there are 34 centres approved to open in September, located in communities across the Island.

There were some centres that applied and were not approved.

"We've met with them all and discussed who was ready and who wasn't ready. And we're working with another 15 centres who have a little bit more time to plan. They have until mid October to get back to us with a plan to address the things that they need to do in order to become an early years centre," said Lowther.

"I think most of them understand why they'd be in round two, or there's a few who may not get there at all. Some of it might be a space consideration or they might have to do some renovations to their space in order to take infants for instance."

Lowther says contracts with centres that have been approved will soon be signed.

The Early Childhood Development Association of P.E.I. plans to hold meetings next week with operators to discuss how to meet all the new requirements, including setting up parent advisory boards.
