Two intersections in the Central Bedeque area will be getting some upgrades in an effort to make them safer.

A $1.4-million project will realign Route10 where it connects to Route 1A and upgrade the intersection of Dunk River Road and Callbeck Street.

Stephen Yeo, the chief engineer for the P.E.I. Department of Transportation, said those intersections have a history.

"Over the years we've had some problems with the intersection of Route 10 and the intersection of the Dunk River Road," he said.

"We are going to make some changes on the alignments and provide additional turning lanes to make it safer to maneuver through the area."

Yeo said the province also expects to bring in a speed management plan through the entire 1.8-kilometre area.

"There have been a number of accidents. In the past year there was a fatal accident at the intersection of Route 10 and 1A," he said.

A crash in October at that intersection killed a 67-year-old Island woman.

Yeo said negotiations are underway to purchase a small piece of farm land at the intersection of Route 10. Tenders will be called next month and the work will take about six weeks to complete.

A public meeting on the project takes place Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the William Callbeck Centre Boardroom in Bedeque.
