Rumours rife over Peas concert venue

The location hasn't been set for a Black Eyed Peas concert on Labour Day, but the show's promoter insists it will be on Prince Edward Island.

The location hasn't been set for aBlack Eyed Peas concert on Labour Day, but theshow's promoter insists it will be on Prince Edward Island.

"[The concert is] absolutely and positively happening, and absolutely positively happening in P.E.I.," David Carver told CBC News.

When firstannounced in mid-July, the Black Eyed Peas were to play at a campground in Alexandra, just east of Charlottetown. But opposition from local residents concerned about the effects 20,000 hip hop fans would have on the 300-person community has raised questions about whether the concert will go ahead there.

Organizers have already sold more than 10,000 tickets for the concert.

There have been concernsthat the show could be moved to either Moncton or Halifax if a suitablevenue on the Island can't be found.

Sources tell CBC News that staff at Charlottetown city hall are convinced the show will be held at the Charlottetown Driving Park, and Tourism Minister Philip Brown indicated that was a strong possibility.

"My understanding is that negotiations are going well," said Tourism Minister Philip Brown.

"There is a will on both sides for the event to take place there. So, I'm hopeful that an agreement can be reached."

Earlier this week city council voted against having the event at the Driving Park. Mayor Clifford Lee said it could be a great boost for tourism, but he doesn't feel the site can handle the expected number of fans.

But the council votewas symbolic only. The venue is zoned for an event such as a concert and it could go ahead.

Meanwhile, Summerside Mayor Basil Stewart stepped into the discussion Thursday, offering up his city as venue for the event. It was unclear just where in Summerside a concert of that size could be held.
