Seniors only growing population on P.E.I.

The population of P.E.I. is continuing to grow, but it is only the seniors demographic that is contributing to that growth.

Population growth for those aged under 65 flat

The population of P.E.I. is continuing to grow, but it is only the seniors demographic that is contributing to that growth.

The news is in a report released Tuesday by Statistics Canada. These are the changes in population from 2010-15.

  • Seniors population in 2010: 22,088.
  • Seniors population 2015: 27,180.
  • Change in seniors population: 5,092
  • Change in total population: 4,769.

Growth of the population under 65 was largely flat.

Statistics Canada notes that nationally, for the first time in 2015, there were more Canadians aged 65 and over than aged 14 and under. This has been the case on P.E.I. since 2012.
