Seventh potato found with sewing needle inside

Another potato from P.E.I.has been found with a metal sewing needle inside, bringing the total to seven.

Prince Edward Island RCMP said in a news release, that a consumer in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador found the needle in a bag of potatoes purchased two weeks ago. RCMP believe all seven potatoes came from a Summersideplant.

The latest table potato came from a bag bought from the same store and from the same lot number as apotato discovered in Labrador City on October 6.

"It was purchased before the recall but only discovered on October 19 by the consumer. Police can confirm that this potato originated from the same Prince Edward Island supplier, Linkletter Farms Ltd. of Summerside, P.E.I.," Sgt. Leanne Butler said in the news release.

The RCMP's investigation into the tampering began on October 2.

"So far, no one has been injured as a result of these apparent food tampering incidents," said Butler.

Consumers urged to contact RCMP

The RCMP Major Crime Unit, Forensic Identification Unit and members of the East Prince RCMP detachmentcontinueto investigate. Butler said the affected potatoes are being shipped to an outside forensic laboratory for further testing.

Butler said potatoes from Linkletter Farms Ltd. have been sold throughout Atlantic Canada. Tampered potatoes have been found in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and New Brunswick.

In addition, staff at the Cavendish Farms plant in New Annanfound sewing needles in some french fries during the production process on October 2. The company shut down production as a precaution, but resumed the next day after any suspect potatoes were removed.

"The RCMP are still encouraging anyone who finds any foreign metal objects in a table potato to please not throw out the potato, metal object or the bag from which it was purchased," Butler said.

If a tampered potato is found, people are asked to contact the East Prince RCMP at (902) 436-9300 to ensure the RCMP can obtain it as evidence for the investigation.
