Some of the fastest speedskaters in eastern Canada will be competing in Charlottetown this weekend.

The Canada East Short Track championships take place on Saturday and Sunday at the EastlinkCentre.

It will showcase the best speed skaters in the 11- to 15-year-old categories.

Organizer Dawn Binns said it's a great year for the event to come to Charlottetown.

"It is the biggest competition Speed Skate PEI has hosted in over 20 years. It is great because it is our 25th anniversary. It is the biggest competition that this age group has," she said.

Binns said it will be a busy weekend of competition that will expose the sport to Islanders.

"We are going to be hosting five provinces, 122 skaters, plus officials, team staff. So it is a pretty big deal. And it is a great opportunity to showcase the sport to the province," she said.

Short track speedskating national development team member William Preudhomme, who won a medal in his first-ever World Cup, will be the honorary ambassador of the championships.

Admission to the event is free.
