Part of the Stanhope campground at the P.E.I. National Park will reopen Monday following some major upgrades, Parks Canada says.

Work will continue on another section that will remain closed to visitors.

"We have about 80 sites that we are going to be opening on July 13," said Tara McNally MacPhee, the acting visitor experience manager for the P.E.I. National Park.

"Some of the exciting things that we're really excited for our visitors to see when they come in is new washroom buildings, they have a new playground over there as well, and brand new sites actually as well. So we're really excited about that."

McNally MacPhee says Parks Canada will continue to work on the remaining 60 sites, which should all be ready within the next month.

The $1-million worth of improvements also include upgrades to the camper registration area, roads and the addition of a firepit on every site.

While work continues, efforts will be made to minimize disruptions to campers, says Parks Canada.

The campground was originally supposed to be ready by the start of the camping season, but the harsh winter and late spring delayed construction.
